Samuel Beckett

A series of four theatre posters created for a selection of Samuel Beckett plays including ‘Krapp’s Last Tape’, ‘Endgame’, ‘Waiting For Godot’ and ‘Happy Days’.

The posters can be purchased on request here.

CHALLENGE

The challenge for this project was to work through the Beckett plays and shaping a fresh approach that would strike the right balance between abstract, visual consistency and emphasis of writing craft.

Goals

  • Consistent and artistic poster series.

  • Communicating essence of Samuel Beckett’s plays.

STRATEGY & CONCEPT

As Beckett’s plays are very abstract, full of metaphors and very visual language the starting point was to boil down to visual essence of each plays by writing down key words.

Based on that, I interested in using an experimental approach using analog collages and textures. Especially the abstract and simplistic nature of Brutalist architecture shapes mixed with a Modernist but slightly grotesque approach.

First steps included constructing and photographing architectural cardboard models of Brutalist buildings, repurposing the imagery for hand-cut collages to create a series of shapes. These shapes were then used in different scales to design a visual for each poster.

The final artwork was scanned and digitising to create the final poster compositions and repurposed for an animated version.
